and mission for her majesty. prince harry making history this morning, his first big assignment on behalf of his grandmother, queen elizabeth. our bob woodruff is right there with him. check this out, the prince busting a move. and a somber saturday morning. hundreds of thousands wake up to sheer devastation. just take a look at this. unbelievable destruction from the ferocious weather that raked through the heart of the country. homes, schools, businesses, entire towns all gone. flattened in a flash. this massive storm spawned more tornados in one day than we usually see in an entire month all the way from the gulf coast to the great lakes. >> huge storm. you can see it there on the map. here's what we know. at least 29 people dead. 13 in indiana, 14 in kentucky, 2 in ohio. this is the second round of killer tornadoes just this week. we have new pictures of a

tornado bearing down on henryville, indiana, chewing up everything in its path. >> the number of casualties expected to rise, unfortunately. we have an entire team covering this massive wave of storms. we begin with ginger zee in the hard-hit town of henryville, indiana. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. 95 tornadoes ripped through yesterday. if they're all confirmed reports, this would be the greatest tornado day, one-day event in march for all history that we have in weather. numbers, though, don't matter at this point when you start talking to people. the sun coming up and the scene revealed. it's simply unbelievable. in southern indiana, it was a wave of vicious tornadoes. >> i looked up, i seen debris everywhere. next thing i knew, i was like, i thought it was a dream. >> reporter: within minutes, they were gone. this is what they left behind.

neighborhood after neighborhood flattened. here in henryville, the small town almost wiped off the map. the roof was completely lifted off a local high school. miraculously, the 400 students were spared. the powerful winds lifted this school bus and moved it straight into a local restaurant. next door, the small town of marysville was completely wiped away. al that's left, foundations of homes that once were. >> we seen the storm clouds coming in. you could see them swirling and debris. we went in the house. all i could feel was the wind sucking at us. >> reporter: across the region, shell-shocked residents couldn't believe the extent of the damage. >> we were told we had 11 minutes by the news channel. within two seconds, it came through and moved my house off the foundation. >> reporter: nearly 100 twisters forming across america's midsection. we were there as the one that hit henryville formed. eventually becoming the biggest storm in the state.

the time is 2:08. you've gotta see this. circulation, it's happening. the atmosphere is angry right now. you can see it. deadly twisters and lightning struck in other states. including ohio. where this woman lost her sister, trying to get to a shelter. >> she got crushed. with her son. her son was with her. he tried to dig them out. he couldn't do it. >> reporter: so many shattered homes. devastated communities. lost lives. let me take you through the scene behind me. we're looking at henryville high school. where much of the damage here happened. the bus with cars crashed into it. cars upside down in front of what was the high school. and finally, if you follow me over here, the roof ripped off the gymnasium. seeing this in person, i cannot tell you how wild it is to imagine that no one else was killed here in the school.

we're very fortunate for that. after something like this happens, you wake up, you wonder is it over? and for some, it's not. already, many wind reports near columbia, south carolina. i want to show you a map of who is still included in the threat area. this is for the next couple of hours. the morning and early afternoon. the carolinas, the panhandle of florida. southeast georgia. you could still see isolated tornadoes, more importantly hail and damaging winds. we'll have more coverage throughout the program on what happened here in indiana and across the region. for now, back to you. >> and ginger, we're going to be talking to people who were right where you're standing right now when that tornado hit. now to western kentucky. which has never seen anything like this. 14 people dead. the area's most lethal outbreak of tornadoes ever. kendall harold of our abc affiliate wcpo rode out the

storm there. she's in piner, kentucky. good morning to you, kendall. >> reporter: good morning, dan. the pictures and what we're seeing here in piner are devastating. three people in piner alone were killed last night. i spoke with an official. he tells me that as of right now, everyone is accounted for. no one is missing. but, of course, as the sun is rising this morning, he says that could all change. now that same official tells me, in his 25 years of work, he has seen nothing like this. it's the worst damage he's ever seen. he compared it to a war zone. the tornadoes came barreling through this part of kentucky. [ sirens blaring ] leaving a wake of destruction in the path. tearing roofs off homes, breaking windows, blowing the side of this house completely off. those who survived are considering themselves lucky. >> he was inside the house. we thought we would go to the basement. we seen it on tv. we got to the basement. stepped out on the patio. but just within seconds, we just

barely made it into the cistern. >> reporter: it's western kentucky's deadliest outbreak of tornados in the last 40 years. the damage is everywhere. trees and power lines toppled. emergency crews searched through the night for survivors. the twisters were quick. the devastation they left behind will be felt for a long time. the only thing left of this house is the front door. >> describe what you see or have heard over the past couple of days. >> unreal. unreal. i mean, it -- it's a tragedy, that's for sure. >> reporter: kentucky governor steve beshear will visit this morning to assess damage himself. bianna? >> all right, kendall, thank you. and further south, the same system spawned tornadoes across alabama. hitting the same area where 250 people were killed nearly one year ago. abc's steve osunsami is in

harvest, alabama, with the latest. good morning to you, steve. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. we have found two homes on this same street that were ruined by two separate tornadoes in less than a year. this one belonged to jim and judy hodges. a tornado, of course, destroyed this home in april of last year when the storms came through alabama. and then yesterday, another storm took it away. the family is devastated. they hid in a shelter. they were married here. he was born in this home. and now, like so many other families, they have to rebuild again. >> had it not been for our neighbors across the street, we would have still been in the house. >> reporter: there are so many stories of survival. and so many families who have lost. in tennessee, sheila is planning a funeral for her mother who was killed in the storm. >> my parents have known each other since they were 12 years old. my mother passed away here. over there. this is something they built and worked all their life to have. they've always been together.

and it's all gone. and nothing here matters. my dad's devastated. >> reporter: it was such a heartbreaking loss to hear. the national weather service says there were at least six tornadoes that tore through alabama and damaged or destroyed as many as 200 homes. >> i'll pick it up from here, steve. thank you. so incredibly sad. we've been showing you this picture all morning. that high school in henryville, indiana, hit by a massive twister. the roof ripped off with students inside. the restaurant across the street basically impaled by a school bus. somehow everybody got out alive from both buildings. now we're going to hear from two people that were there when it all happened. todd and julie money. they join us live. todd and julie, good morning to both of you. as i understand it, the two of you were inside a restaurant across the street from the high school. and todd, you went outside as the tornado was approaching. tell us what you saw. >> well, it was multiple

vortexes. there were people standing outside the high school. and we seen one rope vortex head off to the north horizontally. it dissipated. and then another white funnel. it sucked up in the cloud. and the people were still standing outside the high school. maybe eight or ten of them. and i yelled at them, tornado, tornado. and fortunately, they run in. and as soon as it got too close for comfort, we ran into the basement. >> and julie, i understand, both of you were in the basement together. as your husband just said. what did it sound like as the tornado barreled overhead? >> um -- our ears pressurized. so i think that blocked the sound. we did hear the bus slam the building. we had no idea what it was until we came out. very loud popping, cracking.

we thought the building was gone. >> and todd, when you finally emerged, what did you see? >> oh, just done. unreal -- the damage. it just -- it's just hard to comprehend what these things can do to structures and trees and vehicles. it just -- unbelievable. >> were there moments, julie, where you thought perhaps you might not make it? >> oh, yes. yes. definitely thought that. we lost our car and our friend lost his restaurant. my brother lost his home. but nothing can replace those lives. >> todd, how about you? were there dicey moments for you where you had doubt about whether you would make it through this thing? >> yes, there was.

because fortunately, it missed the restaurant by maybe i'm guessing 150 feet. but if it would have come over the restaurant, i think it would have sucked us all out of the basement. >> well, we're just so pleased that both of you made it through. we're grateful for you to take the time to speak to us this morning. todd and julie money, from henryville, indiana. once again, we're really pleased both of you made it through this alive. thank you. now we switch gears to paula faris who is in for ron this morning. with the headlines. good morning to you. >> great to be here. people have been saying you're by long lost sister. great to work with you. good morning, everyone. we begin with one of the largest class action settlements ever. oil giant bp has reached an agreement with businesses and individuals affected by the massive gulf of mexico oil spill. bp will pay about $7.8 billion. they could end up paying more. that deal does not include the federal government, the biggest plaintiff in this case.

and more fallout from the burning of korans at a military base in afghanistan. at least five service members may face a disciplinary review for their involvement, which officials say was caused by a series of mistakes. the incident sparked deadly riots last month and led to the shooting deaths of six american troops. and the nfl's new orleans saints face a massive fine and possible suspensions for running a so called bounty pool. rewarding their players for injuries to opponents. saints players contributed money to the pool and would get paid when an opposing player was knocked out or car rid off the field. the team was running that program since 2009, the year they won the super bowl. and their defensive coordinator had been heading the whole thing up. and finally, look at this. a helicopter slamming into the ground in arizona. breaking into pieces. amazingly, the pilots walked away with no serious injuries. the helicopter, which had lost control, was part of a film

crew, shooting a stunt on the ground. the man that shot the video turned off his camera, fearing the worst. he thought the pilots had died. this was not part of the stunt. they took the seat belts off and walked away unharmed. amazingly. >> thank you, paula. great to have you here this morning. >> great to be here. >> we'll be seeing you throughout the morning. now to rush limbaugh, whose mouth has gotten him into trouble before. perhaps not like this. what one of america's most powerful and popular conservatives said about a female law student that has sponsors pulling out and provoked a surprise call from the white house. david kerley has more on that. david, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, dan. some incredible ingredients in this one. a president, a popular radio talk show host, and a law student who is the center of this really dynamic and heated political debate. >> initially hurt. he expressed his support for me. speaking out about the concerns of american women. >> reporter: sandra fluke,

thrust into the 15 minutes of fame spotlight got a call from the president of the united states. >> how i was handling the things that had been said about me. and thanks me for speaking out. for expressing the concerns of so many women. >> reporter: denied by republicans to appear on this panel of five men discussing insurance mandates. and contraception, fluke spoke to a democratic panel. first the blogosphere lit up. with chris schism. criticism. then rush limbaugh weighed in. >> she must be paid to have sex. what does that make her? makes her a slut, right? makes her a prostitute. >> reporter: that was on wednesday. on thursday -- >> we want something for it. i'll tell you what it is. we want you to post the videos online so we can all watch. >> reporter: womens groups and democrats astounded by the radio host's crass language fought back. >> shame on you for calling the women of this country sluts and prostitutes.

stop supporting the hate-mongering of rush limbaugh. >> reporter: advertisers are feeling the heat. some are pulling their money. limbaugh is standing his ground. when the president called fluke, he had message not just for her, but for her parents, too. >> he said he hoped that my parents were proud of me. that meant something. he said as a father, he would understand how that would feel. that was very touching. >> she said obama told her she should tell her parents they should be proud. okay. i'm going to button my lip on that one. >> reporter: apparently, the only thing he did button his lip on. we're seeing republicans distance themselves from limbaugh. the speaker of the house said the comments were inappropriate. even the house member who banned her from speaking at the hearing said they were self-serving comments. so far, four sponsors have pulled ads from rush limbaugh. bianna? >> it will be interesting to see if anyone else does. david, thank you.

we turn to another political showdown. it's "your voice, your vote." washington state goes to the polls today. with just three days until the super tuesday battle, there is so much at stake. let's bring in john avlon. a senior political columnist from "the daily beast." good to see you, my friend. let's talk about washington. how important are the caucuses? who is expected to win? >> polls show mitt romney pulling ahead. rick santorum had been in the lead. remember, it's a caucus. low turnout, high intensity. ron paul's folks are hoping to have a good showing. right now, mitt romney seems to be in the lead in washington. >> what is important is super tuesday. all eyes on ohio. mitt romney and rick santorum in a very close race. very heated. what do you expect? >> this has been neck and neck. rick santorum has been leading. ohio being a pivotal general election state. but really a test of electability. that's how people are seeing it. mitt romney needs to pull out a win.

if santorum can win ohio, he's got a big case to make. there are more delegates at stake than in the previous contests combined. >> and one name we haven't talked about yet, newt gingrich. just a few weeks ago, he said everything was riding on super tuesday. is there any chance he can come out ahead? >> that will be a tough call. he's staked his campaign on winning georgia, his home state. where he served as a congressman. if he can't make that hurdle, it will be hard to stay in the race. even though he might want to. if he can pick up georgia and another southern state, he's got a strong case. >> and mitt romney let's say he does win on tuesday in ohio. does it give him the edge he is looking for? >> it gives him an edge. this is the difference with this super tuesday. this is not determinative. it's pivotal. >> busy few days ahead. thanks for coming in. stay longer next time. all right, dan. now to the mysterious star witness in the tyler clementi trial. the case that got america talking about cyber spying and the bullying of young gay people.

the unidentified witness, the man who was secretly videotaped in bed with tyler just days before he killed himself. abc's linsey davis is on the story. >> reporter: these are the trembling hands of the most anticipated witness of the trial. man known only by the initials mb. he's the man tyler clementi had a sexual encounter with only days before tyler jumped to his death. the same man that clementi's roommate allegedly spied on with a web cam while mb and tyler clementi were kissing. the court would not release his name or face or allow audio to be recorded. speaking of their second encounter, mb told the court -- i notice there was a web cam faced in the direction of the bed. i thought it was strange, being in a compromising position. it caught my eye that there was a camera lens looking right at me. abc news has learned that mb does not want ravi to go to

jail, though he's currently charged with 15 counts of invasion of privacy and he faces up to ten years in prison. during the five-hour testimony, the 32-year-old witness said after meeting the 18-year-old clementi on a social networking site for gay men, they had three sexual encounters. during the defense cross-examination, he was vague highly defensive and occasionally awkward. he was clear that he became uncomfortable leaving the dorm after the second encounter because a group of about five students were staring at him. it was like they were looking at me for some reason, he told the court. in the end, the defense tried to drive the point home that mb didn't know tyler's last name until he read about his suicide in the paper. for "good morning america," linsey davis, abc news, new jersey. >> our thanks to linsey for bringing us that story. let's get back out to ginger zee in indiana for another check on the weather. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, bianna and good morning, everyone.

want to remind everyone, it's more than just the high school. and the restaurant. we can see damage for miles here around henryville, indiana. certainly, the pieces of the high school, we're talking about a desk being thrown and strewn in with a tree. there's a baby's wash cloth here. sheet metal all throughout. and insulation everywhere. here's what i found interesting. pieces of the edifice. people ask me, does it matter what type of building you're in? this is a little piece of brick that was sheared off. and just broken and shattered. i see a lot of them all over the place. it really doesn't matter. if you were in a basement, you were in the best place. the big question, why? that's what a lot of people are waking up to and asking. i want to share with you the ingredients for what made yesterday a spectacular day, tornado-wise. let's get to the graphic now, if we can, and give you an idea. you had so much warm water in the gulf of mexico. warmer than average.

that warm, moist air rushes up, reaches the cold air. very strong jet stream. that low pushed across. the first stuff in alabama was a warm front. then it was an all-day event. with a stretching cold front. as i went to bed last night, i kept thinking, i cannot believe this is still happening. this is a long, one-day event that will go down in history. dan and bianna? >> we know you have seen many twisters. it's interesting to hear your perspective. thank you. moving on. a big development in the murder of a mother of two, a crime that knocked one of america's wealthiest communities back on its heels. a handyman who worked for the victim's husband has now been arrested. does it clear the husband? mark greenblatt is here with more. mark, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. they arrested the handyman who worked for jane and bob bashara. joe gentz claims the husband was to blame for jane's death. gentz is the one sitting in a jail cell this morning. joe gentz walked into court for a custody hearing for his

daughter friday. he walked out under arrest for murder. >> you're under arrest for the murder of jane bashara. >> reporter: gentz is the former handyman of bob and jane bashara, a marketing executive found strangled in her suv. just days after she was killed, gentz admitted he was the one who strangled her. but gentz claimed bob bashara offered him money for the crime, then held a gun to his head forcing him to do it. something bashara vigorously denies. >> i don't own a firearm. i have nothing to do with this. that is a sick assessment on his part. it shows how deranged he is. >> reporter: sources tell abc news gentz has the iq of a third grader. friday, he remained guarded shortly before his arrest. do you have any words for us? >> no. >> reporter: okay. >> no words. >> reporter: a friend who drove gentz to court said this. >> he's scared. real scared. panicking.

>> and why is that? >> because he doesn't know what is going to happen. >> reporter: but bob bashara himself remains under scrutiny with allegations he was involved in a secret, s & m sex room next to the bar he owns. in a previous interview with abc's andrea canning, bashara's daughter, jessica, stood by her father. >> i just know how my mom felt about him. there was never any -- even hint towards violence. >> reporter: with gentz now under arrest in connection with murder, police continue their investigation. meaning bob bashara is not out of the woods. as of this morning, gentz has not been officially charged with murder. just arrested. bob bashara through his attorney says he feels a quote profound sense of relief knowing that joe gentz is off the streets. but, bianna and dan, remember that bashara himself has been publicly named a person of interest. more to come. >> thank you for coming in, mark. >> you're welcome. let's turn to the other headlines.

ron is away. paula faris is here. >> i'm sure we're going to be on political overload this coming week. good morning, everyone. republicans in washington vote in the state's gop presidential caucuses today. it's the last test for the four candidates before super tuesday, where there will be voting in ten states. this is something no parent wants to hear. cvs is apologizing after a one of its pharmacies in new jersey mistakenly gave breast cancer pills to children instead of fluoride pills. the pills look similar. there are no reports of kids getting sick from the mixup, so that is good to hear. and federal officials have announced the bust of one of the biggest counterfeit scams. the ring imported more than $300 million worth of ugg boots, apparel, and other goods. the counterfeit items were made in china. and finally, free clothing, of course, for a price. hundreds of people lined up in san francisco wearing nothing but underwear. that's right, their underwear to
